I’m a sucker for fresh flowers. So I have a few flowering plants in my little garden that bring me so much joy when they bloom. A few months back I adopted a little plant that was growing in the cracks in the concrete outside our garage. It was such a stubbornly beautiful flower-bearing plant that I had to bring it home and pot it. I planted it in a small ornamental planter that I had and it has done so well for the past six months. This past week though I noticed that the plant looked cramped in that small pot. A couple of branches were (in their typical stubborn way) growing in different directions and bearing fruit at the tip of these wayward branches. So I (reluctantly) decided to get my hands dirty and moved this precious little plant to a larger pot. It’s been a week and the previously tiny (tightly contained) plant is now blossoming even more. More branches are emerging, more flowers are blooming, and the leaves look green and lush almost as if the newly expanded space has allowed them to thrive even more.
While I repotted the plant I was reminded of that passage of scripture in Isaiah 45 verse 2 which says “Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes.”
There is something significant that happens when we position ourselves for greater personal growth and stretching. It’s like we are saying to God, ‘I’m here- I’m ready for you- do what you will.’
In which area of your life have you been living constrained and devoid of big dreams?
You feel like you’re stuck but is that because you have gotten used to your small ‘pot’ life?
Is it time to maybe make room for you to grow more?
You may need to launch that small business idea that you have had for the longest time. You may need to start trying for that baby you have longed for. You may need to actually take a chance on that relationship you have been considering for a while now. You could sign up for that course which you have been thinking about. You could actually decide to look for a new job instead of constantly complaining about the current one.
If you and I want to move into the next season of growth and multiplication we will need to get off our couches and make the effort of making room in our lives for this growth and multiplication.
God does all the heavy lifting of course, but we must do our part in the process!
Are you ready for the Big Pot?
